Habits to Lower Dementia Risk

The Life’s Simple 7 habits of the American Heart Association have been linked to lowering the risk of dementia in populations with both low and high genetic risk:

  1. Stay Active
  2. Eat Healthfully
  3. Reduce Sugar
  4. Don’t Smoke
  5. Maintain Healthy Weight,
  6. Manage Blood Pressure, and
  7. Control Cholesterol.

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables also lowers the risk of dementia because the antioxidants they contain help protect the brain from oxidative stress.  Good choices include blueberries, kale, spinach, broccoli, oranges, and papaya. 

Takeaway:  Habits that are good for your heart are also helpful in lowering your risk of dementia.
