Choose a Guiding Word for 2021

This is an exercise where you choose one word to be your driving force for the year.  Your Guiding Word can help you pursue goals and make decisions.

According to Chrissy Carroll, one way to start is to make a list of things that answer the prompt: I want. She includes a great list of potential words to consider in her article linked below.

Tara Wagner offers these five steps to select your guiding word:

  • Set an intention, and create time on your calendar to think about it;
  • Reflect on last year, what were your challenges, priorities, achievements, and areas of neglect;
  • Bring closure, and forgive those who need it and release commitments that don’t serve you;
  • Examine the information you have so far for patterns and lessons that can guide you next year; and
  • Reflect on the words you find on your short list to help you choose one.

Check out Tara’s video at the link below for more details about these steps.

A final resource is the One Word Challenge from Gordon, Britton, and Page where you can sign up for seven days of email action steps to help you determine your Guiding Word.

Takeaway: Rather than resolutions, consider choosing a Guiding Word for 2021.

Thank You for reading about brain health and mental strength.  I am taking a short break and will be back with a new Lawyer Well-being Newsletter on January 7.
