Brain Benefits of Cinnamon

Ceylon Cinnamon or True Cinnamon has properties that reduce inflammation, improve the immune response, and lower cancer risk due to its antioxidants.  All these benefits are known to improve cognitive function and lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), which degrades memory over time.

New research examined the impacts of cinnamon on cognitive function, also known as memory and learning.  Out of 251 studies that were considered, 40 studies were included in this systematic review.

Researchers found that cinnamon can be neuroprotective in the following ways:

  • Its antioxidant properties interfere with oxidative stress.  Scientists believe the brain is highly susceptible to oxidative stress, which increases the risk of AD.  Oxidative stress also increases cancer risk.

  • It can decrease and eliminate free radicals, which decreases the risk of cancer.

  • It inhibits tau protein accumulation, which is also linked to AD.

  • It reduces inflammation, which is increased in the brain in AD.

  • It increases the production of Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factors (BDNFs), which are important to brain cell endurance and synaptic plasticity, the capacity of brain cell networks to grow and function.

Takeaway: Ceylon Cinnamon or True Cinnamon has properties that can improve cognitive function and lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease.  Sprinkle it in coffee, tea, bone broth, smoothies, or on oatmeal or yogurt.  Use it in your favorite recipes.

Well-being is a journey, not a quick fix
